Tippi Hedren was cast as the lead female and the chemistry did flow. Marnie is a compulsive thief and sexually frigid brought about by psychological problems resulting from a troubled childhood. Sean plays Mark Rutland, her employer, a young, rich widower who develops an obsessional infatuation with her. Hitchcock regarded Sean's performance as first-class, but reviews were mixed.
